The House of Representatives has received a communication from President Bola Tinubu, seeking approval for the extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2023 appropriation bill. President Tinubu proposed an extension from March 31, 2024, to June 30, 2024. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced this at the start of the day’s plenary session, adding that the president also requested an extension for the implementation of the supplementary appropriation act until June 30, 2024. These extensions are deemed necessary to ensure the full implementation of the provisions of both acts.
Meanwhile, the House has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials and first aid care to victims of flooding in Makoko and Otumara Communities within the Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency of Lagos State. Additionally, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has been tasked with immediately commencing the rehabilitation of damaged roads in the affected areas. The resolution was prompted by a motion titled “Devastating Flood and Erosion in Makoko and Otumara Communities,” raised by Hon. Moshood Oshun, member representing Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency. Oshun highlighted the socioeconomic impacts of flooding and erosion, particularly in low-income and overcrowded communities.
In a separate development, the House condemned the abuse and proliferation of orphanage homes in Nigeria. It called on the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to collaborate with all states and the FCT to ensure full compliance with the mandate of orphanage homes. The motion, raised by Hon. Emerengwa Sunday, member representing Ikwere Federal Constituency, Rivers State, addressed concerns over orphanages prioritizing profit over their core mandate, leading to nefarious activities. The House mandated the Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development to work with relevant authorities to standardize orphanage homes and shut down those operating below standard.
Following the adoption of various motions and bills, the House adjourned its plenary session until April 16th of the current year.
